SI Camp: The Pointy End

What a different vibe to this time yesterday. With whiteboards more resembling graffiti walls, breakout rooms having a distinctly 'lived-in' feel, and a secret stash of empty Red Bull cans revealing the scale of last night's efforts, the 2pm finish line is just beyond the next bend (or line of code, as the case may be).

There is a general level of silence as people work against the clock to resolve their concepts and every team member is immersed in a laptop finishing designs, coding, designing a powerpoint that won't possibly capture the blood, sweat and caffeine that has been invested so far.

So at the pointy end of the inaugural SI Camp, I find myself contemplating something that has emerged again and again in conversations over the last 48 hours. Despite the fact that the ASIX Social Innovation Camp is an incredible and exciting experience for all involved, at its core it is a humbling and inspiring example of the power and passion of the human spirit. The kindness and compassion that exists within this group of changemakers, who have effectively 'volunteered' their time on an otherwise beautiful Sydney weekend to work together (and hard) in the name of making the world that much better.

Our campers may never directly benefit from the initiative they are labouring over, yet they do it in the name of serving a community they have identified as needing a helping hand, a voice, a friend, a lift... There are no words to describe it. Just a warmth that comes from a faith in the collective capacity of the human race.

So to all the campers tapping away at the 11th hour - well done for your effort, passion and commitment. By just being here, you are playing your part in changing the game, and that in itself is worthwhile.
